My Approach: Internal Family Systems Therapy

Here at Parts of Me Therapy we use an approach called Internal Family Systems Therapy. We have found this approach helps clients more than most traditional therapeutic exercises.

One of the issues with traditional talk therapy is that it keeps things only at the cognitive level. When it comes to trauma or other mental health symptoms you need to process things at an emotional level or what we call bottom up processing. When therapy is too cognitive, it can halt your progress and not relieve the symptoms you are feeling.

IFS uses this bottom up approach to allow you to experience and relieve these emotions safely with the help of a therapist. We explore the protective mechanisms you have that cover up the hurt parts of you and then safely proceed to healing the pain.

The great thing about IFS is that it doesn’t keep you attached to the hip of a therapist forever. Once we work together and accept and relieve some of these emotions, you can then practice IFS on your own using certain exercises.
